You heard of a little girl who, intent at pleasing her mother, doodled with a sharp stone on the body of her car. How does the parent respond to the startling consequences of such a pure intention? Will it backfire on the well-intended wannabee artist with the unforeseen boomerang effect of a puzzling harsh punishment? Will mom angrily acknowledge the scribbly token of her child’s affection, or will she be moved to her very core by such an innocent gesture?

Do not lose sight of the future. What you see happening is only the remnants of the past making way for the illumination of a new path, a new way, that over time will become more evident. And what better way to invest in the future than to be present and active in the lives of those you love.
Take care of your young ones. Guide them with the same light that guides you… the light of love, hope, faith, patience, kindness, and compassion. Do not teach them fear but point out for them the signs of opportunity. Do not rush them or scare them into thinking they are running out of time, but slow the flow of time and listen to them. Help them to consider their options carefully. Let them know that they have an eternity in which to express themselves. Give them the longer view.
